SET APART

This little bottle of anointing oil is to remind you that consecrating something (setting it apart) to God is a deliberate act.

When you anoint something (or someone) in faith, you are offering that thing to God to use for His purposes. It is an act of submission and faith. Scripture also refers to the Holy Spirit as the anointing WITHIN for our benefit, and an anointing that comes UPON us for the benefit of others.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about anointing.

Note: This bottle contains pure refined coconut oil.

SPIRITUAL BATTLE

This shield, helmet, breastplate, sword, belt, or shoes is to remind you that you are fully equipped for this life.

We are commanded to “fight the good fight of faith.” Remember that we are never fighting people. People are not our enemies. We are fighting spiritual principalities that wage war with God. There are battles here on earth but remember that Jesus has already declared ultimate victory. Your role is to stand confidently in faith in that victory.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about spiritual battle and victory in Christ.

GOD AUTHORS LIFE

These little baby feet are to remind you that God is the author, sustainer, and purpose giver of life.

Every human being from conception to death was created and put here on earth with great intention and for a purpose. If there is still breath filling your lungs, God is not done with you yet. You can choose to agree with what God says about your life, or you can choose to agree with the enemy of your soul who, according to John 10:10, seeks to steal, kill, and destroy.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about human life, creation, and His purpose in it all.

Note: These little feet are approximately the size of a 10 week old fetus’s feet.

SHARE SCRIPTURE

This bird seed is to remind you to share God’s Word generously.

In Matthew chapter 13, the Word of God is referred to as seed. It says that the Kingdom of God is like a farmer who throws out the seed KNOWING that a quarter will land on the path and the birds will eat it, a quarter will land in the weeds and be choked out, a quarter will land in the rocks and be scorched by the sun, and only one quarter will land in fertile soil and produce a harvest. We are simply called to plant it and keep moving. God does the rest.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about seeds, hiding God’s Word in your heart, and sharing it with others.

GOD IS WORKING

This blank canvas is to remind you that God is always working in your life.

When God is working in our lives, it’s often like He is painting with invisible ink. Sometimes you can see it and sometimes you can’t. Don’t be surprised or offended when others seem unaware of what God is doing in and through you. Be content to know that God, your heavenly Father, your Daddy, the most incredible artist who ever existed, is making a MASTERPIECE out of your life, whether or not anyone else can see it.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about what God is doing in and through you.

TESTIMONY & INTERCESSION

These scissors (bolt cutters) are to remind you of the power of your testimony and intercessory prayer.

When God sets us free in any area of our lives, I imagine He gives us a pair of bolt cutters to assist in the freedom of others. When you see someone struggling in an area you previously struggled with, you can share your testimony and call on God to set them free. “God, You did it for me, will You do it for them?” Revelation 12:11 tells us that we overcome the enemy by the blood of the Lamb (the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross) and the word of our testimony. Romans 10:14 asks, “How can they believe if they’ve never heard?” Your story matters. Share it.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about our testimony and intercessory prayer.

RENEWING THE MIND

This brain is to remind you to renew your mind to agree with Scripture.

The Bible says that we are spirits; we are eternal beings. When it talks about your spirit, it says from the belly of a man or the center of his being, so when I talk about who I am, I point to my belly, my spirit. Scripture says that I have the mind of Christ. The mind of Christ, the Holy Spirit, lives in my spirit. Scripture says that while I AM a spirit, I HAVE a soul. My soul is my mind, will, and emotions or my thoughts, desires, and feelings. My soul is my natural mind and I live inside of a body or flesh.

Our job here on earth is to make our body obey the will of God, and to bring our soul (mind/will/emotions) into AGREEMENT with the mind of Christ in us. This is called renewing your mind, or causing your natural mind to agree with what the Bible says about God’s will for our lives.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about renewing your mind beginning with who you are in Christ.

NEW CREATION

This butterfly is to remind you that you are a new creation in Christ.

Just like a caterpillar climbs into a cocoon, melts down into a pile of goo, and is recreated into a beautiful butterfly, when you accept Jesus Christ as your LORD and Savior, the Bible says that you become a new creation in Christ. The old is gone and the new has come. The very substance of who you are is different.

I was told, “Donna, if you were a clay pot before you accepted Jesus Christ as your LORD and Savior, you are now a glass vase. Your very substance has changed. You are not the same.” I spent the first 39 years of my Christian walk trying HARD to “be a good Christian.” I didn’t fully understand that my righteousness was a gift given to me, not something that I would wake up every day to re-earn.

From the moment I accepted Jesus, I crossed over from death to life by the power of the Holy Spirit, and if His fruit is LOVE, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control, that’s who I am, too. I didn’t need to “try to be a good Christian.” I just needed to renew my mind to understand what it means that I AM in Christ.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about being a new creation in Christ.

GOD’S TIMING

This clock is to remind you that God’s timing is not like our own.

The Bible says that one day to God is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like just one day. God exists outside of time, and His timing in our lives is not accidental. As we mature in faith, timelines and human assumptions about time become less important. Learn to trust God and His timing. Invite the LORD to decide how you will spend your time and remember that the Holy Spirit leads with peace. If you are ever feeling an anxious PUSH to do something with urgency, pause. God will never lead with urgency but will gently invite you to participate in His plan, even if He is wanting you to act immediately.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about time.

SACRIFICE

This cross is to remind you of sacrifice.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines sacrifice as the act of giving up or losing something of value for the sake of something else. God sacrificed His Son Jesus on the cross for our sake so that we could stand before Him forgiven and worthy as sons and daughters of God. In response, we are urged to lay down our lives, pick up our cross and follow Jesus. What does that even mean?

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about what Jesus did on the cross and what we are called to do as we lay down our lives, pick up our cross, and follow Him.

CALLING

This elephant is to remind you of your calling.

Jesus told His disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me, therefore go…” We are to go into all the world and share the gospel. That is a MASSIVE undertaking and, as Scripture clearly states, “The harvest is plenty, but the workers are few.” How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. How do you reach the WHOLE WORLD with the gospel of Jesus Christ? One person at a time.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about your calling and purpose in your life.

GENEROSITY & GRATITUDE

This fish is to remind you to be generous and grateful.

You may feel like you don’t have much to offer to God but the little bit you do have placed in His hands can be used in miraculous ways. The little boy who offered his five small barley loaves and two fish had no idea that Jesus would feed 5,000 men along with women and children that day. What a shock it must have been to that little boy to watch the disciples gather 12 baskets full of leftover pieces after everyone had enough to eat! What in your life do you hold back because it seems like an insignificant thing to offer?

Those who understand it is all God’s to begin with and thank Him for what they have are some of the most generous people on earth. If you had today only what you thanked God for yesterday, what would you still possess?

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about generosity and gratitude.

CHARACTER

This fruit is to remind you of who you are.

I love the analogy, “What comes out of a tube of toothpaste when you squeeze it? Toothpaste.” But why? Some might say, “Because you applied pressure,” but the reason it is toothpaste that comes out is because toothpaste is what’s inside. When life puts pressure on you, what comes out? Faith or fear? Peace or anger? Patience or impatience? Kindness or aggression? Love or hate?

Galatians 5:22-23 says that the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  Remember that you are a spirit, who has a soul (mind, will, emotions), and lives inside of a body. When you are made new, (see Butterfly trinket) it is the Holy Spirit who makes you new, and His character becomes a part of who you are. When we behave or speak in ways that don’t agree with who we are in Christ, it’s an opportunity to renew our minds to agree with God about who we are. (See Brain trinket)

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about who you are, and ask Him to help you learn to agree with what He says.

PERSPECTIVE

These glasses are to remind you that God doesn’t see things the way we see them.

His ways are higher, His thoughts are higher, and His reasons are purer. When He sees your struggles, He sees the outcome of them. He knows the underlying spiritual cause of everything, and He knows the key to victory in every situation. He was here yesterday, He is here today, He is already in tomorrow, and He knows how everything will work out. He doesn’t see us or other people like we see them. When Gideon would be going up against the enemy, Gideon wasn’t sure 32,000 soldiers would be enough - God knew it was FAR too many for God to get the glory from the victory. When the prophet Samuel was looking at Jesse’s family for who would be the next king, he certainly didn’t think little David would be the one, and when the prophet Elisha’s servant was afraid, he asked God to allow him to see in the spirit that those who were for them far outnumbered those who were against them.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about God’s perspective. Ask God to help you see yourself, your family, the circumstances of your life, the political climate of your country, and even the world the way He sees it all.

WORKING WITH GOD

This hand is to remind you that we are to work WITH God, not just FOR God, and that God commands us to rest like He did.

Jesus said, “My yoke is easy and My burden is light. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls.” Notice it is our SOUL (mind, will, emotions) that will find rest. If you notice that you are mentally and emotionally exhausted as you work for God, perhaps it is because you are working to carry something that doesn’t belong to you. I picture two oxen yoked together: me and Jesus. If I start feeling like I’m REALLY working hard to pull the load, it’s probably because rather than walking WITH Him, I’m trying to get out ahead of Him. I just need to slow down and let Him take the lead again.

Rest was so important to God that He made it one of the original 10 commandments, putting it right up there with “Do not murder” in God’s ranking of importance. I believe that without rest, it is impossible to truly please God. He didn’t call you to go into the world to save it - Jesus already did that. He has called you to take Him into the world WITH you and share the incredible news that God has done it all, and the only thing left for us to do is agree with Him and participate in His rest.

The hand and the heart are remarkably complementary. The heart represents the source and motive of LOVE. The hand represents LOVE expressed through faithful action. 1 John 3:18 alongside Ephesians 2:10: God creates us anew for good works and He calls us to LOVE through deeds and truth. A hand can perform an impressive act of service without LOVE (1 Corinthians 13:1-3) and love that never moves us toward practical care can remain little more than a claim (1 John 3:17-18).

The heart reminds us why we serve, while the hand reminds us how LOVE becomes visible. Together, they remind us that the life of Christ is meant to be revealed through us.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about working WITH God versus working FOR Him and what His rest looks like.

BIBLICAL LOVE

This heart is to remind you that God’s (Agape) LOVE looks very different from the fickle, conditional love of the world.

God is LOVE, and apart from Him we cannot LOVE. God‘s LOVE is patient, kind, longsuffering, protects, hopes and perseveres. His LOVE keeps no records of wrongs and does not envy or boast. It is not proud, rude, self-seeking, or easily angered. It does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.

Human love falls short and fails all the time, but God’s LOVE never fails. His LOVE is ALWAYS available, but it must be chosen. You can choose to accept the unconditional LOVE God offers or reject it, but Scripture tells us that He offers it freely to the whole world. When people fail to LOVE you as they ought, it is because they are not drawing on the supernatural LOVE of God to do so. The same is true when you fail to LOVE others as you ought to.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about LOVE and how to live a life of LOVE that honors both God and others.

BIBLICAL DECLARATIONS

This house is to remind you about the power of your words.

The Israelites were turning to other gods when Joshua famously said in Joshua 24:15, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” He looked at what the people around him were doing and declared, “Not in my house!” In the book of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were willing to be thrown in a fire because they were unwilling to worship the king. Daniel was willing to be thrown into the lion’s den because he refused to eat food offered to pagan gods. The prophet Elijah stood before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him, but if Baal is god, follow him.” How committed to honoring God with your life are you? When the world says, “It’s not that bad,” are you willing to stand alone on your convictions about right and wrong? Do you know that the Bible says that the power of life and death is in our words? Words matter more than we are aware of.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about the power of your words.

RECORD YOUR JOURNEY

This journal is to remind you of the importance of recording your journey with the LORD.

Joshua 4:1-9 describes how God instructed the Israelites to take TWELVE stones from the Jordan river and establish a memorial. The purpose was that when future generations asked what the stones meant, the people could tell them what God had done. A journal can serve a similar purpose. The Israelites could look at the stones and remember the river God brought them through. Years from now, you may open a journal and remember a season you thought you would never survive, and then see how God sustained you through it. At the end of the day, a journal does not preserve God’s faithfulness, but rather it preserves your remembrance of His faithfulness.

When we have profound moments with God, we believe that we could never forget that moment; but, over time the details fade, and sometimes we remember things a little differently than they happen, or we remember His words a little differently than we originally heard them. When we hear a fantastic sermon, we are sure that we will remember that point the pastor made forever; but, in time (and sometimes before we even leave the parking lot), we find ourselves racking our brains to remember what the pastor said. Get in the habit of writing down those moments where you can see God’s hand at work in your life, the lessons He teaches you, and the faith building moments you have along the way.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about remembering and recording your journey with Him.

FREEDOM IN CHRIST

This key is to remind you of freedom in Christ.

Scripture says that “who the Son sets free, is free indeed.” The Christian church is almost as full of people living in bondage to the lies of the enemy as the rest of the world. The church is full of people who are saved but starving. If there is any area of your life in which you feel bondage or oppression, it’s time to start agreeing with what God says about you. When you feel that familiar vice drawing you back in, OUT LOUD (so the devil can hear) thank God that you are free. Do not use your freedom in Christ as permission to live in sin. Scripture says that when we sin, we are slaves to sin. In Christ, we have the ability to choose who we will be a slave to. We can be a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness, but we can’t do both. Choose today who you will serve.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about freedom in Christ.

HOLY SPIRIT

This lightbulb is to remind you of the Holy Spirit who empowers you to live for God.

After Jesus returned from the dead, He came back and spent 40 days with His disciples. Before returning to heaven, He told His disciples, “It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” The SAME Holy Spirit who lived in Jesus, enabling Him to heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out demons, is the SAME Holy Spirit who comes to live in you when you accept Jesus Christ as your LORD and Savior. The Holy Spirit is a gentleman and He will only involve Himself where He is invited. Invite Him into every aspect of your life. He is called our Comforter, Counselor, Advocate, Helper, Guide, Convictor of Sin, Intercessor, Revealer of Truth, Teacher, Witness, and more. Lean on Him for everything - not your limited human understanding.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about His role in your life.

GOD’S PERSPECTIVE ON RESOURCES

This money bag is to remind you of God’s perspective on your finances and resources.

God cares what we do with our resources - including our money. You may have heard that “The root of all evil is money.” That statement is actually twisting what is said in the Bible. The Bible says that “The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.” Jesus talks a lot about our resources, including but not limited to money. He cares what we do with our money but He also cares how we use our talents, gifts, time, and energy. We are expected to use ALL of our resources in ways that honor the one who gave it all to us. We are told that to whom much is given, much is expected, and to him who has much, more will be given, and to those who are not wise, even what’s given will be taken away.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about your resources.

HUMILITY

This moon is to remind you to remain humble.

Humility is not denying that God has given you gifts. It is recognizing that those gifts are entrusted to you - not evidence that you are more valuable than someone else. There is a beautiful distinction between the moon's identity and its illumination. The moon remains the moon even when it cannot be seen. Its identity does not change according to how brightly it appears in the sky. Similarly, our worth before God is not measured by how visible, impressive, or celebrated our contributions are.

When we look up to the sky, we aren’t witnessing a celestial competition. The moon doesn’t need to compete with the sun; it simply reflects the light it receives. Both scientifically and as an analogy, the moon does reflect sunlight but its phases depend on the geometry between the sun, Earth, and moon; not on the moon receiving different amounts of sunlight overall. Spiritually, the illustration is about dependence upon Christ, not a literal explanation of our spiritual condition.

Humility is not believing that everyone is better or more worthy than you. Humility says, “God created me perfectly and has good plans for my life. He has gifted me in many ways that He intends me to use for His glory. You are NO LESS important than I am and what you have to offer is no less important than what I do.” The LORD said to me a while ago, “Donna, when you realize that you are NOTHING… a grain of sand in a world FULL of beaches, you will walk before man with humility. When you realize that you are a priceless, precious daughter of the King, you will walk before man with purpose. I want you to walk before man with humility AND purpose.”

Just like the moon, we have no natural light of our own. We were created to reflect the Son. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” In another moment He told His disciples, “YOU are the light of the world.” Jesus came to earth to reflect the Father’s LOVE for us and, as imitators of Christ, we are here to do the same.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about walking humbly before both God and man.

WORSHIP

This music note is to remind you that worship is not simply something we sing; it is how we respond to God with our entire lives.

Worship is more than a song. The first time the Bible mentions the word worship is in Genesis 22:5 when Abraham asks his servants to “wait here while my son and I go up to the mountain to worship.” Abraham is fully aware that God has asked him to sacrifice his one and only son Isaac on that mountain and yet he uses the word worship.

Worship is a sacrifice and, when times are hard, it can feel like even more of a sacrifice. Hebrews 13:15 talks about offering God a “sacrifice” of praise. Worshipping or praising God does not feel natural in all circumstances, but it is commanded of us. Why would God insist that we worship Him? Is He so insecure that He needs His creation to worship Him? No. He knows that when we are worshipping Him, our eyes are off of our temporary troubles and planted firmly on the One who is FAR above all those troubles and where our help comes from.

We WORSHIP God for who He is, and we PRAISE Him for what He has done for us. Praise God!

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about worship and praise.

FAITH

This mustard seed is to remind you of faith.

My brain has noted and loves the extraordinary contrast in size between a mustard seed and a mountain. A seed is tiny and can be held between 2 fingertips; meanwhile, a mountain can literally dominate the entire horizon. Despite that contrast, Jesus uses this imagery in Matthew 17:20. The emphasis is not that we must manufacture mountain-sized confidence. It is that the effectiveness of faith is grounded in the God upon whom it depends. Perhaps the most encouraging truth of all comes from Mark 9:24 because even the person who says, “I believe; help my unbelief!” is still bringing what faith they have to Jesus.

The Bible says that without faith it is IMPOSSIBLE to please God. Many times when Jesus healed people, whether He spoke words, touched them, or they touched Him, He told them that their faith healed them. There are instances where He healed people like the blind man in Mark 8:22–26, the man born blind in John 9:1–7, and the deaf man in Mark 7:31–37 where having faith was not mentioned as to why they were healed, but Hebrews chapter 11 is a really great chapter to read on Bible characters who accomplished great things by faith, and many of them without ever seeing the fulfilment of what God had promised them, but we can see the fulfillment.

Faith involves assurance in something you can’t see and you can’t prove. One minister says, “Faith is the currency of heaven.” Just as you spend money to buy tangible things on Earth, spiritually, you “spend your faith” on things you need God to do here on Earth. The Bible says we are each given “a measure” of faith. Renewing our minds to agree with the Word of God causes that measure to increase. Jesus said that if we have faith the size of a tiny mustard seed, we can move mountains with our words. I can’t explain it all, but I believe it!

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about faith.

PRAYER

These praying hands are to remind you of the power of prayer.

Prayer is not simply a wish. It is not like rubbing an oil lamp and calling on a genie to come out and grant our requests. It is not like sending a letter to Santa on Christmas hoping he will think you’ve been good enough for a gift this year. Prayer is not a last resort, a hail Mary, or “all we can do.” Prayer is not “little old me” down here on earth calling out to a God who is WAY OUT THERE… somewhere. The Bible says that when we have invited Jesus Christ to be our LORD and Savior, we are invited to come BOLDLY to the throne of Grace to receive help in our time of need. It says that when we have invited Jesus to be our LORD and Savior, He sends the Holy Spirit to live inside of our spirits, making us new, and also providing a way for us to speak to the Father. Scripture says that when we don’t know how to pray, the Holy Spirit can pray through us with groanings we can’t even understand. We are told there is a prayer language made available to us that only God understands, so we can communicate with the Father without the enemy knowing what we’re talking about.  We are told that some things, like doubt, only come out through prayer and fasting. We are commanded to pray and intercede on behalf of others.  he Bible has a LOT to say about prayer and it’s worth spending some time learning what prayer is, how Jesus tells us to pray, what can stop our prayers, and how to pray according to God’s will.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about prayer.

BRIDE OF CHRIST

This ring is to remind you that we are called the bride of Christ and that marriage on Earth is intended to mirror our “marriage” to Jesus, the Bridegroom.

It might sound odd to hear that when you accept Jesus as your LORD and Savior, Scripture now calls you the bride of Christ. That concept may sound even more odd if you are a man. Being called the bride of Christ is not a literal marriage like between a husband and wife sexually, but rather it is an intimate picture of a husband (Jesus) laying down His life for His bride (the church).

We are told that a husband is to LOVE his wife as Jesus loved the church, willingly setting aside his preferences and desires to care for his wife, even being willing to lose his very life if necessary for the sake of his wife. Wives are called to RESPECT their husbands as the head of their home. She is called to submit to her husband, and when your husband is an honorable man, loving you SO MUCH that he would be willing to lay down his life for you, submitting to him is a joy and an honor because you know that he would NEVER intentionally do anything to harm you.

People talk about what the Bible says about marriage like it’s horrible and dishonoring to women. I could not disagree more. If people TRULY understood the concept of marriage biblically, they would see that it is the most beautiful and fulfilling relationship this life has to offer. If a marriage is not good, my own included, it is because either one or both parties are not doing marriage God's way.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about marriage.

NEED FOR SHEPHERD

This sheep is to remind you of your need for a Shepherd.

Jesus is described throughout Revelation as the Lamb who was slain, yet in Revelation 7:17, the Lamb is also the One who shepherds His people. When one stops to think about the significance of the concept that the Shepherd became the Lamb, and then the Lamb became the Shepherd who leads His people to Living Water, it connects with John 1:29, where John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The imagery connects Christ’s sacrificial LOVE with His ongoing care.

There are certain concepts that are covered repeatedly in Scripture and one is the concept of sheep and shepherds. We are referred to as sheep and Jesus as the Good Shepherd who is willing to lay down His life for the sheep.

Jesus is called “the Gate” through which the sheep enter into the sheepfold, and that when we enter through the Gate, there is safety and rest. Pastors are also referred to as shepherds over flocks. A pastor spiritually should be looking over their congregation much like a shepherd would look over a flock of sheep. Shepherds keep their flocks together and moving in the same direction because a sheep that is separated from the flock is vulnerable to predators. A sheep that has wandered from the flock is likely injured or lost. A GOOD shepherd isn’t satisfied with sheep just wandering off. He will leave the 99 together and go after that one lost or injured sheep. I could talk all day on this subject but I’ll let the Word speak for itself.

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about sheep and shepherds.

BODY OF CHRIST

This skeleton is to remind you of the body of Christ: the church.

I used to really dislike all the skeletons that get put out in the fall. A few houses in town leave their GIANT skeletons out year-round. This year there seems to be an exorbitant number of them for sale in every store and now it’s not just human skeletons, it’s dogs, cats, rats, and even birds. I was talking to the LORD about my dislike of these things and He reminded me of the body of Christ. Now every time I see a skeleton I think about how very important each and every part of the body is.

If any one of those bones are missing or broken, the body becomes in some way disabled. I find the skeleton to be an especially interesting symbol because the body’s structure is interconnected. When one part is injured, other parts often compensate for it. Think about it: if we go blind, then our other senses become heightened both due to practice (such as listening or ‘honing in’) and our brain forms new connections that did not exist in visually able people. What was once used to process sight within our occipital cortex will then “change courses” and be given a reassignment to process touch, language, hearing, and smell. It is interesting to note that if you twist your right ankle, your body will naturally begin walking in such a way that transfers the weight to the left leg primarily. When there is an injury, the body will compensate, but how much better is it to walk in divine unity?

Every bone in our body is there by design and was created to serve a purpose; the same is true of us as members of the body of Christ. There are many denominations within the Christian church and each one believes somehow they have figured out a more correct way to understand the meaning of what the Bible is saying. What if God is simply opening our eyes to see different aspects of who He is and what He is calling us to in the same way the femur has a different role than the little bones of our fingers? What if we as a body decided to let each part perform in the way God is calling them to and we quietly went about loving and serving God and people in the way we feel uniquely gifted and equipped to?

Invite the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what the Bible has to say about the body of Christ, unity, and giftings.

FEAR

This skull is to remind you that God did not give you a spirit of fear.

One of my FAVORITE verses is 2 Timothy 1:7, which tells us that God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. God is a spirit - Holy Spirit. We are told that we are spirits; we are eternal beings. If the Bible says that GOD did not give us a spirit of fear, who did? All that I know is that if it’s not a gift from God, I don’t want it!

A friend pointed out to me that in this verse, the Greek word for fear is deilia which refers to cowardice or timidity. She told me it was important to mention that not every involuntary feeling of fear is sinful or spiritually sourced. We are told well over 300 times in Scripture some version of do not fear, do not be afraid, or fear not. I believe He means it.

I’ve always heard that faith and fear cannot co-exist, and that doubt is a version of fear. James 1:5-8 tells us that when we doubt, we are like a double-minded man, unstable in all we do and that, when we pray, if we doubt, we can expect to receive nothing. My friend reminded me that although saying “faith and fear cannot co-exist” is an encouragement to trust God, Scripture also gives us examples of faithful people experiencing fear.

David says in Psalm 56:3 that he trusts God when he is afraid. Peter becomes frightened while walking toward Jesus, yet still cries out to Him for help in Matthew 14. Then, Jesus Himself experiences profound anguish in Gethsemane while remaining obedient to our Father’s will. Courage is not necessarily the absence of fear. Sometimes courage is actually the conscious and very intentional decision to trust and obey God while fear is still present. This distinction matters because people experiencing anxiety, trauma, or panic should not be made to feel that their involuntary physical responses prove spiritual failure.

Remember that faith is a substance. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith is the currency of heaven. Without money, you can’t buy anything and without faith, spiritually you cannot receive. There is a quote that says FEAR is false evidence appearing real. FAITH is the antidote to fear. It is my firmly held belief that worry, concern, anxiety, apprehension, dread, fright, and panic are all expressions of fear. 1 John 4:18 says that perfect LOVE casts out fear and one who fears has not been perfected in love. God is LOVE and in Him there is perfect peace.

HEALTH

This stethoscope is to remind you of what God says about your health and healing.

The stethoscope is particularly meaningful because it reminds us to listen carefully to the suffering of others, to seek God faithfully in our own suffering, and to remember that no diagnosis can diminish a human’s worth before Him. Healing may come suddenly, gradually, through medical care, or ultimately in the resurrection. The LOVE of Jesus is not reserved only for those whose bodies have recovered.

This is a loaded subject within the body of Christ. I had no idea until I started looking into it and talking about it. I have spent a LOT of time wrestling with this subject because on August 22, 2023, in a moment, God healed me of bipolar. Eight months prior to my healing, I met a new friend who suggested that I had “come into agreement with mental illness” and I could CHOOSE to “come into agreement with Jesus for my healing.” She explained that the Bible says Jesus carried our infirmities, so why would I? He carried my griefs and sorrows, so why would I?

I was offended. I had loved God for 39 years and I certainly had NOT “come into agreement” with mental illness. I had suffered since my teen years but was not diagnosed until I was 40. I was relieved it had a name and there might be help for me. I’m not going to tell you what to believe about healing but I can tell you that even now, even with different conditions in my physical body, I KNOW that Jesus is my Healer. He did everything necessary to provide healing to me and my job is to agree with Him about that.

Scripture says that EVERYONE who touched Jesus WAS healed and that if everything He did during His three years of earthly ministry was to be recorded, the world wouldn’t have enough books. I hear many people who say, “God _______ (insert something bad in their lives) did this to me for His glory.” I still wrestle with this one. The Bible says that all good and perfect gifts come from the Father. Illness and death are not good, but there is a promise that He uses all things for our good and His glory when we let Him. We are told that in this world we will have trouble and John 10:10 tells us that we have an enemy who is seeking to steal, kill and destroy. I can point to many areas in my life where I have suffered because I opened the door to the enemy to take things from me through my own ignorance or outright rebellion to the Word of God. I encourage YOU to prayerfully read what the Word has to say about health and healing and decide for yourself what you will believe.

SOWING & REAPING

This sunflower is to remind you of the principle of sowing and reaping.

Anyone who has ever grown ANYTHING knows that what you put in the ground will determine what grows. If you put a tomato seed in the ground, a tomato plant will grow and produce tomatoes. If you put an apple seed in the ground, an apple tree will grow and produce apples.  You cannot plant a rock in the ground and expect a sunflower to grow.

Your life will produce a harvest of what you sow. If you sow seeds of anger, bitterness, and division, you will reap or harvest the same. If you sow seeds of LOVE, Peace, and Joy, that will be the fruit of your harvest. The world calls it “karma” and says, “what goes around comes around,” but it is true spiritually that, in time, you will reap what you sow.

You can’t plant a tomato seed in the morning and expect to be eating tomatoes that night for dinner. It takes time for that seed to grow to maturity and produce fruit that you can eat. The same is true spiritually. Sin starts out looking insignificant and we don’t think it’s a big deal, but looking at inappropriate images can lead to a pornography addiction, infidelity, and worse. Eating a couple hundred calories a day more than your body needs doesn’t seem like a big deal. Eating one 210 calorie plain donut more than your body needs per day and, in one year, theoretically you would gain between 10-21 extra pounds in just one year. Maybe 10 extra pounds doesn’t seem like a big deal, but if you do that for 10 years, you wake up one day weighing 100 pounds more than your ideal body weight. Our bodies aren’t as simplistic as calories in and calories out, but you get the point.

EVENTUALLY, your life will produce a harvest that reflects your thoughts, words, and actions. What you think about or meditate on, you will eventually say, and what you say will eventually lead to actions. The Bible is clear that the fruit of your life will clearly show what you have planted… maybe not today or tomorrow, but eventually.

WORD OF GOD

This sword is to remind you of the Word of God.

The Word of God is called the Sword of the Spirit. There are three words for "word" in the original Greek:

Logos = Refers to the continuous, objective, or total written word of God and is also used as a title for Jesus in John 1:1 (Used over 300 times in the New Testament) John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God"

Rhema = A specific utterance, saying, or personal speaking of God applied to a specific situation.  (Used over 70 times in the New Testament) Matthew 4:4 "by every word (rhema) that proceeds from the mouth of God" and Ephesians 6:17 "the sword of the Spirit, which is the word (rhema) of God"

Graphe = a writing or sacred scripture.  Used specifically to refer to the physical text or written scriptures of the Holy Bible. (Used 51 times in the New Testament) 2 Timothy 3:16 "All scripture (graphe) is breathed out by God..."

Remember that the Word of God refers to both the physical written text of the Bible (Jesus) AND the rhema (Word spoken, applied, or made alive in you by the Holy Spirit).

FORGIVENESS

This washcloth is to remind you about biblical forgiveness.

Jesus teaches us that receiving God’s Mercy and extending mercy to others cannot be separated in the life of a faithful disciple.

When someone has wronged you, you don’t have to go far to find someone who will tell you that you have every right to hate them. We live in a cancel-culture where we have all become blind to the ways that we offend others and have become acutely aware of what has been “done to us.” We wish harm on people who have hurt us and delight in seeing “those people” suffer.

Grace, mercy, and forgiveness are foreign terms. It is very SOBERING to look at what the Bible has to say about forgiveness. The Bible says that if you refuse to forgive ANYONE (even someone who murdered a family member) God CANNOT forgive you. I just offended the majority of people who are reading this… hang with me. Forgiveness has NOTHING to do with that other person. Forgiveness has to do with releasing that person from your soul and allowing God to be God in their life. It does not mean you become their best friend or even have them in your life. It does not mean that you don’t have boundaries. Boundaries are often necessary with people who have repeatedly offended, but even with boundaries and even without a relationship, you can surrender your right to hold a grudge.

The Bible also says that if you go to offer anything to God and you know someone has something against you, you are to go and make things right with them THEN offer your gift to God. There ARE conditions to God forgiving you, but when you meet those conditions, His forgiveness is SO WORTH IT! The Bible says that when He forgives you, He takes your sins as FAR AWAY as the east is from the west and, for His own sake, He forgets them.

More good news! If God has forgiven you and someone brings your past to your attention trying to get you to feel bad about it, you now know it’s not God. The enemy is called the “accuser of the brethren.” He wants to keep you trapped in sin and shame because from that place, He can keep you from effectively walking in the righteousness Jesus bought for you. Hebrews 9:14 tells us that the blood of Christ can actually cleanse our conscience from dead works to serve a living God. It enables us to recall past trauma without the emotional response and I believe eventually to make it so those events don’t even come to mind like they used to.

COMMUNION & FELLOWSHIP

This wineglass is to remind you of communion with God and fellowship with others.

God desires to have an intimate relationship with us. When we take communion, the bread and the wine as Jesus commanded us, we are remembering His sacrifice on the cross and our utter dependence on that act to stand in right fellowship with God. It reminds us that it is nothing we have done, but only by the grace of God through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ that any of us have the ability to stand before God.

When we fully understand what He purchased for us, it makes fellowship with other messy humans not only possible, but enjoyable. With both brothers and sisters in Christ, and with those who have yet to come into a right relationship with God, we know that we are no better or worse than anyone else. This fact alone should give us the humility to forgive freely and fellowship with others as Jesus offers to fellowship with us.
